Hi! For those who don’t know me, I’m Becca – a socially-focused, trauma-informed personal trainer based in Birmingham, England, with a 20-year background in union and community organising.
I help to build the health, strength, fitness and power of people and communities – the foundation that enables all change. I run Big Bag Training, and I’m also a member of We Got to Move training co-operative. My favourite thing is introducing beginners to the fun and exciting world of strength training.
This year I’m writing a unique and inclusive book called Heavy Lefting, on left-wing politics and fitness. The book is aimed at readers from the world of activism, organising and social change work, who don’t currently have a regular habit of physical movement. Maybe due to understandable pre-conceptions about fitness and fitness culture, maybe due to practical obstacles.
In the book I’ll reveal my research into the history of political philosophies around fitness and our bodies. I’ll share practical, accessible tips as an organiser-PT, and stories of navigating barriers from others with different experiences than my own. And I’ll crowd-source a vision of a better world of fitness, freed from capitalism, by weaving together the voices of everybody in the book.
I’m fully self-employed, so any time I take out from personal training to write is unpaid. If you would like to, and are able to, you can chip in any amount, one-time or regular, towards helping this book become a reality, at this link. You can also chip in via my PayPal (friends & family option), which will mean your full amount reaches me with no fees taken.
Your solidarity will support me in creating this resource, and also help to provide a needed safety net in case of any sickness or other time out. I really appreciate all contributions, especially at a time when living costs are so high. It will make a significant difference to me, and to the project. All supporters, whether one-time or regular, will be thanked in the book.
I’m excited to bring Heavy Lefting to you in 2025, via Repeater Books!
